A Working Parent Mentor Can Make All the Difference in Your Career
A Working Parent Mentor Can Make All the Difference in Your CareerA Working Parent Mentor Can Make All the Difference in Your CareerMy early days as a working parent were mora complicated than I ever expected. I would attend a new mommy group made up of highly degreed and accomplished women, but none of us had a clue as to how to successfully return to work- or even whetherbei all of us would. When I met clothing designer Amy Coe, she welches just a few years ahead of me in raising her daughter, but her confidence and success were light years ahead of mine. She took me under her wing and helped me navigate the trickiest job I would ever have being a working parent. She was an excellent mentor on all levels, and I truly cant imagine how my career wouldve gone without her.Being a working parent is elend something you ease into, nor is it something that gets simpler with time. From managing childcare for the first time to figuring out how to pump at work or manage office politics when you r kid is constantly sick, the list of new demands is endless and relentless. So its important to glean tips from people whove done it before. But my own experience reminds me of the importance of one particular resource that many successful people dont discuss often enough a working parent mentor.Typically, a professional mentor would help you with career guidance, networking, resume advice, whatever. A working parent mentor follows the same basic idea, but is more specialized. This person is your go-to contact with insights to help you navigate your way through the minefields you didnt even know existed.Whats the best way to manage your parental leave, or your sometimes-difficult return to work? What are some tips for getting out of the house in the morning now that you have a baby to wrangle? Are there support groups or specific benefits at your company to help working parents?Lauren Smith Brody, author of The Fifth Trimester The Working Moms Guide to Style, Sanity, and Big Success After Baby, underscores the power of parental mentoring One powerful way we can help new working parents is by recognizing the tremendous development and growth that goes on during the Fifth Trimester, or the period right after the newborn haze, when many moms return to work.Working dads need mentors, too.All too frequently engaged dads are penalized at work- often for simply taking paternity leave at all. Finding other working dads is essential on a personal level, and maybe even on a societal level. After all, the more men encourage each other to actually take the parental leave theyre entitled to, the less stigmatized itll become.Where to Find a Working Parent MentorDepending on the size and diversity of the company you work for, the perfect would-be mentor may sit just a few desks over. That co-worker who runs out in the middle of the day when daycare calls to say her toddler has a fever? The one with macaroni art adorning his desk? Theyre the ones.I mentor because it was not a lways easy for me and Ive got plenty of great information to share, information I wish someone would have given me, says Megan Darmody, Director of Press, Events and Partnerships at UrbanStems. Some things you might look for in an ideal working parent mentorA parent whose kids are older than yours. When youre dealing with a teething baby, it can be refreshing to speak with someone whos way past that point- to remind you that this stage is temporary, and that youll probably look back on ansicht days more fondly than youd expect. Someone with more experience can lend both advice and perspective.Someone in your industry, or at least with a fairly similar job. After all, a self-employed freelancer might not have many insights for you about how to navigate office politics, and someone who sits behind a computer all day may not be much help if youre a teacher or a doctor. If your situation is unique in any way- for example, if youre a single parent or have a child with special needs- you mi ght see if you can find a mentor who has personal experience in that area, or at least who can empathize and understand your singular challenges.Someone wholl always be kind and honest. If they pretend to be the perfect parent, theyre probably not going to be so understanding of your foibles. And if theyre so nice that they dont tell you when they think youre messing up, youre not going to learn.Your mentor doesnt necessarily have to work at your current company. You might know someone from a past job, or even from around town (meet at the gym, mentor for life?). The point is simply to find someone with valuable insights to share.Cheryl Patran, CEO of the Pump Station and Nurtury in Santa Monica, is a strong advocate of peer support. She advises, Just pick up the phone and ask that new parent you admire or respect for her ideas and feedback- she wants to help as much as you want to be supported. How to Find Your People OnlineMaybe youre the first of your friends to have a kid, or you work at a small company where there arent many other parents. If you dont have any would-be mentors in mind, consider looking for one online.Because youll likely get the best insights from people in your own industry, try searching for groups by profession. Or try one of these tipsAsk around to see if anyones heard of a group for parents in your industry (your non-parent work friends mayve heard of these resources, even if they dont need them yet).Try searching Facebook directly, as thats where many of these groups live. (For example, this group is for engineer mothers.) While some are open, many are moderated or closed groups to ensure a modicum of privacy and make members feel more comfortable about speaking freely. If you cant find a group specifically for your industry, consider joining this general group for all working moms or a regional group for parents in your area (for example, there are groups for Brooklyn moms, Atlanta moms, Denver moms, and practically everything in bet ween).Unfortunately, the options for dad groups tend to be less robust, but you might try posting (or getting your partner to post) on a local moms forum to ask whether there are active dad meetups or groups in your area. You might also check out digital resources such as Fatherly and CityDads. You might find that an online network is exactly what you need for bouncing around ideas or seeking advice. Or you might choose to seek out a one-on-one mentorship after all. These groups can be a great jumping-off point for meeting other parents nearby, and once youve made friends you can identify a few whod make for good one-on-one mentors. How a Working Parent Mentorship WorksSome mentorships are more formal than others. If you already have a rapport with this person, you might simply grab coffee and share stories about your week (or month, or however often you meet). In other cases, especially if this is someone youve met through work but arent independently friends with, you might prefer a somewhat more formalized experience. Having an agenda can prevent those awkward, So, what do you want to ask me? Umm, I dont know. Want to just chat? moments.Ideas includeStructuring your conversations around your highest high and lowest low since the last time you saw each otherSharing book suggestions (presumably about career advice or parenting, but if you both share a love of fiction, then why not?)Choosing a specific topic in advance for each meeting, such as family finances or disciplineAttending a networking mixer togetherReading and discussing inspirational stories of successful working parentsWriting out, or sharing, your bucket lists with each other- with your professional and personal goals- both as a form of bonding and to help each other discuss what youre doing to accomplish each itemVolunteering togetherTaking a class together, whether in person or through an online course (Coursera and edX have a lot of really interesting and free options, and General Assembly has ma ny classes that might help you in your day job, such as coding or marketing)How to Create Your Own Working Parent ResourcesYes, youre busy and probably dont have time for some new effort-intensive initiative- but if you dont have immediate access to the kind of mentorship you crave, you can pretty easily set up a Slack channel, monthly lunch date for the working parents in your network, or other informal opportunities to connect. For example, Jennifer Gilmore helped create a peer program at Campbells Soup. I was fresh back from maternity leave and so I understood the struggles of a parent returning to work, she says. These days, the group is known as the Campbell Parent ID Connection, and it has since expanded throughout the company via word of mouth.Of course, you could always start your own group online, too.In 2013, Louisville, Kentucky-based attorney Michelle Coughlin returned to work as a new mother. When I looked around me and felt that I was the only mom trying to balance this legal career with parenthood, I felt like I was drowning. I started MothersEsquire because I needed to know I wasnt alone out there. Her group, which started small and highly informally, has grown to be the leading voice at regional and national conferences when it comes to addressing the high attrition rate that the legal profession has come to accept as normal for women. How You Can Pay It ForwardI have a six-month-old, says one mom I know, so Im hardly an expert, but I reached out to an expectant mom at my company to let her know that Im available if she needs anything as she goes on maternity leave and when she returns. I could still use a mentor, myself, but even in these few months Ive gathered a few insights Im glad to share. As you connect with working parents and share your own earned expertise, dont keep your workplace peer-mentoring under wraps. Sharing or even presenting the impact of these programs to management can help encourage buy-in, formalize the program, and have a n even bigger impact. The bottom line is the bottom line Low-cost mentoring programs are a straightforward way for employers to help limit attrition, and they can be a point of pride. Mentoring is a valuable recruitment and retention tool, after all. The possibilities are endless, and very necessary for working parents. In my own life, Ive found that these bonds forged in the early days of parenthood really last. My mentors and I have since graduated from sharing tips about feeding babies and figuring out daycare to tips on college tours and admissionsThis article was originally published on Fabric. How to Become a Catalog Model
How to Become a Catalog ModelHow to Become a Catalog ModelCatalog modeling isnt what it used to be. Thanks to a little something called the Internet, catalog models are mora valuable than ever. Theyre in shoppers mailboxes of course (print catalogs arent going anywhere anytime soon), but theyre also taking over the digital world. Mobile, desktop and everything in between- wherever the shoppers are, catalog models are there too. All of this increased exposure means catalog modeling is more exciting and lucrative than ever before. But how do you go about landing a job as a catalog model? Here are a few things youre probably wondering. What Brands Are Looking For Catalog models are considered to be commercial models, which means models need to look more like real people than vorwort models. They do need to possess a few basic physical attributes, such as glowing skin, healthy hair, and a killer smile, but instead of falling into the physical requirements of fashion models, they inst ead have to have a look that appeals to the clients target audience. Depending on the catalog, this could mean the client is looking for short, tall, young, old, thin or plus-size models of diverse ethnicities. Theres even a demand for models with disabilities. In other words, if youre not suited to a particular catalog, dont fret There are plenty of other catalogs to try for. You just have to find one that suits your look (as opposed to changing your look to suit a certain catalog). Another option to keep in mind is parts modeling. If you have an outstanding body part, such as your hands, legs, or feet, you may be able to enter the world of catalog modeling as a parts model. How Much Catalog Models Get Paid How much you make as a catalog model depends on so many factors, such as the agency youre signed with (different agencies deduct different fees, usually anywhere from 10% to 20%), your experience level, and the catalog youre shooting for. In general, you can expect to earn a few hundred dollars for a small-scale catalog shoot to ten thousand dollars or more for a popular international catalog. Established catalog models can earn a very good living from catalog work alone, given the sheer volume of photos that need to be taken and the fact that catalog shoots can take days, weeks, or even months to complete. Dont forget that in the United States, models are considered to be self-employed. That means youll need to set aside about a third of each paycheck to cover your income taxes. Jumpstarting a Career The great thing about the modeling industry today is that you dont have to be defined by a particular style of modeling. Many catalog models are also runway or editorial models, and vice versa. As well, many models have used catalog work to jumpstart their careers. David Gandy spent years working as a catalog model, and even supermodel Karen Elson had a brief stint as a catalog model before she made it big. All of this crossing over of divisions gives catalogs a cool factor and makes them all the more appealing to the masses, which is something catalogs have come to depend on for their success. Models and Agencies Most of the major brands in the United States only work with companyapproved modeling agencies in major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, and Miami. Catalogs are expensive and time-consuming to shoot, and clients want to feel confident that theyre booking professional models who will show up on time and get the job done right. As a model, being signed to an agency means youll not only have access to more catalog modeling opportunities but also that the jobs you do book will be legitimate and that youll be paid what you deserve. Its win-win

Job Search Takes to the Court
Job Search Takes to the CourtJob Search Takes to the CourtTransportation executive Ron Huebner didnt expect a tennis game to score him a new job.Ron Huebners two decades of experience managing fleets of vehicles for national companies made him a top contender for jobs in his field. It was his networking - and his forehand - that ultimately won him a job.He didnt expect his tennis game to be anything more than a stress reliever during his job search, but he never expected to be searching for a job in the first place. In October, Huebner accepted an offer from a new company resigned his position and took a six-week vacation to move from his home in Clarksville, Tenn., to the new job and to recharge his batteries. He was doing just that on a cruise ship when he received an e-mail from the new company informing him that the position was no longer available. So Huebner platzdeckchen out to find a job and made the search his occupation. I set aside a certain number of hours each day, resea rching companies, reaching out to my contacts.Huebners main task was to network, and his technique was decidedly low-tech - his collection of business cards. His collection spanned at least two decades, culled from people he met and worked with at national and regional transportation companies. He religiously updated those contacts, keeping notes to on companies they had moved on to, their areas of expertise and their interests. People he had once hired were now great sources for him as he researched companies that interested him. He compiled a database of contacts and began writing e-mails and making phone calls. When I read about a company that sounded interesting, I would check my database to see who I knew at that company, and I would contact that individual and talk to them about, say, the safety award they had won, he said. When I was talking to them, I could get other information about the company, what makes the company tick, what keeps people at their job.He used his contac ts to learn what they knew about how companies were managing in this economic downturn he wanted to find the companies that were up and coming and being led by skilled people. I wanted to do it right the first time, he said. I didnt want to have to look for another job.His database proved useful when he saw a job at a national transportation company advertised in Transport Topics, a trade magazine popular among transportation executives. Huebner found a reporter at the magazine among the contacts in his database. The reporter let him know the company had an office in San Antonio that was likely to be hiring. It was a good sign. I had lived in San Antonio I knew the area I speak Spanish, and that helps me to communicate with the workforce. That little bit of background helped me to prepare if I did get an interview.Tennis, anyone? He sent his resume, and within a few weeks he had interviewed by phone five times and traveled to San Antonio to meet with three executives. He returned a f ew weeks later to meet seven more directors and VPs they discussed the strategies of hauling petroleum and chemicals as well as the companys plans to start using alternative fuel. His knowledge and expertise on these subjects was evident. But the VPs wanted to know one more thing. When they asked me where I was staying that night, I told them I was leaving for the airport after the interviews. They said, No, change your plans. We have a doubles tennis game scheduled, and you are our fourth. It seems they had done their research on Huebner as well and discovered that he was a ranked dilettant tennis player. He stayed the night to play the match. Three days later, the company offered him the job of fleet maintenance manager, with responsibility for all its shops in Texas and a salary beyond my expectations. It was the tennis game that won them over, he said. In this case, the fact that Im older worked to my advantage, he said. They needed someone with expertise and experience. But I co uld also show them that I have a high energy level.I keep myself in good shape, and that was a positive thing for this company, said Huebner, who also was able to also work into the conversation that he was an All-American water polo player. Even though they are a young company with young VPs, I could hold my own with them.Tennis also served to keep him sane during the job search. I can hit that little yellow ball as hard as I want to, Huebner said. Looking for a job can be frustrating

CPA Exam for College StudentsCPA Exam for College StudentsCollege students, if you think you should put off taking the CPA exam for a few years, think again Like many certifications and degrees, the CPA is so much more than just letters after a name or a piece of paper you can frame. Its a marker of your competence and knowledge set, your ticket to professional success. Passing the exam is leid easy, but the payoffs are enormous Not only can you earn a progressively higher CPA salary, but you will also open more doors to career advancement. To find out more about the certified public accountant designation, read All You Meed to About CPA Jobs - and Then Some.College is the perfect time to prepare for and take this rigorous exam. I can offer 11 reasons why students should start working toward the CPA exam now and take it within a year or two of graduation. Here are the 11 reasons1. You can take advantage of school resourcesWhen youre in college, you have access to an entire support ne twork that wont be so readily available after graduation. Most academic accounting departments offer free seminars, review courses and other tools to help you prepare and pass the exam. Some of your peers will be sitting for the exam as well, so youll benefit from the mutual encouragement and various study groups on campus. Since the test is so comprehensive and difficult to pass, youll need all the resources and support you can get2. You have the time and knowledge to prepare (and pass)It takes hundreds of hours to prepare for the CPA exam, and chances are that your schedule will never be as free and flexible as it is now. Once you begin working full time, youll find that the demands of a full-time job will restrict your free time considerably. And if you get married and start a family, youll have even less time to study. As a student, youre already absorbing, processing and analyzing vast amounts of information, and youre used to preparing for and taking exams. In addition, studyin g for the CPA is a good complement to all the accounting principles, reporting standards, regulations and concepts youre already learning. Yes, its time-consuming to study for this major exam in addition to all the other tests you have to take, but your last year of college and first year of employment is the optimal time to work toward this certification.Although the requirements vary, fruchtwein states require test takers to have a minimum of 150 semester hours of education. The experience requirement varies even more, ranging from one year of internship/volunteering to two years of public accounting employment or three years in private or government accounting. See the specific requirement for your state or territory for more details.3. As college students, you qualify for financial supportThe American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), together with Accountemps, offers scholarships each year to outstanding students who plan to pursue a CPA licensure. In order to qualify, you have to be an AICPA member, be enrolled full-time at an accredited U.S. college of university at the undergraduate or masters level, have at least a 3.0 GPA, and have satisfactorily completed six semesters in an accounting-related major.Graduate students without business degrees are eligible for funding through the AICPA John L. Carey Scholarship. The AICPA also offers scholarships for minority students and transfer students. The American Womans Society of Certified Public Accountants has financial assistance programs for promising students who pursue the CPA credential. Also check your states CPA society for more scholarship opportunities.4. Passing the CPA exam maximizes your marketabilityNot all accounting jobs call for a certification, but many of the mid-level positions and fruchtwein of the upper-level ones either prefer or require this accreditation - and pay a commensurate CPA salary for new hires. Passing the exam makes you more attractive to hiring managers than if you had just a ba chelors in accounting or finance. The demand for certain skills is so great that top firms are upping their efforts to fill open positions, and some of the most in-demand majors happen to be finance, accounting and business administration/management. To increase your chances of scoring a good job right out of school, make sure youre on the CPA licensure trajectory. If youre curious about starting salaries, take a look at our Salary Center and download the Salary Guide.5. Being a CPA qualifies you for the most in-demand finance jobsAn increasing number of baby boomer financial professionals are retiring or preparing to retire. This increases demand for people who have the skills to fill the key roles the boomers are vacating. The fact that this turnover is coming at the same time that accounting and finance firms are attempting to build their businesses makes professionals with in-depth knowledge in such areas as Sarbanes-Oxley provisions, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) guide lines and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) in even greater demand.6. College students who take the CPA exam show their work ethicHiring managers look for applicants with not just top accounting skills but also initiative and maturity. A CPA credential shows them that youre serious about the profession and possess the drive and dedication they seek in an employee. Passing the CPA exam also proves your competency in many non-accounting skills - critical thinking, business acumen, written communications, problem solving, professional conduct and ethics, and sound judgment - that are so important in todays hiring environment.7. A CPA nets above-market compensationAccording to our Salary Guide, the CPA certification is leise the most sought-after designation for accounting and finance roles. A professional certification can earn a new hire, on average, an additional 5 to 15 percent. Salaries are on the increase for accounting and finance professionals, with base salaries anticipated to rise 3.7 percent in 2017.8. A CPA has more job optionsCareer development opportunities are simply more plentiful for CPAs because theyre highly versatile employees. The CPA exam prepares you to diversify your offerings to include auditing and attestation, financial accounting and reporting, and regulation and business environment and concepts. CPAs can easily transition from public accounting to senior corporate roles, and vice versa. Whether youre interested in traditional or non-traditional accounting career paths, this certification will give you more options. To move up the career path to senior and management positions, becoming a CPA is vital. In public accounting managerial positions almost always require a CPA certification. Likewise, in corporate finance, it will become difficult to attain the controller or CFO levels down the road without it.9. CPAs are informed professionalsLaws, regulations and technologies change constantly, which is why continuing profes sional education (CPE) is a requirement for remaining a CPA in good standing. All regular AICPA members must complete 120 hours, or its equivalent, of CPE for each three-year reporting period. This is another reason employers value CPAs so highly They know that their certified accountants, auditors and controllers have the most up-to-date knowledge of complicated rules and can offer sound advice and judgment.10. CPAs enjoy prestige and respectThe CPA carries cachet. Because of the stringent requirements to become and remain certified, CPAs are considered the elite in the industry. This designation after accountants names tells employers, clients and peers that they are highly trained, very professional and extremely competent in their field. In other words, those three letters signal to others that youre at the top of your game.11. Its one of the best ways to get ahead in accountingNot only will earning your CPA certification reap the benefits of greater work and advancement opportu nities, youll also gain the respect of your colleagues and earn a higher CPA salary. But dont wait until youve secured your first job or have more experience under your belt before taking the exam. The best time to prepare for it is while youre in school, and the greatest chance of passing it is shortly after graduation, when all the information is still fresh in your mind. To get a head start on attaining this certification, join the AICPA as a student affiliate member. This article was originally published in New Accountant Magazine and recently updated here.

Whats Draining Your Job Search
Whats Draining Your Job SearchWhats Draining Your Job SearchLooking for a job can be exhausting. Its a long process that takes a lot of time and causes many job seekers to get burned out.Job search burnout begins when you start losing any motivation to continue to search after applying for many jobs without any luck. Its not uncommon. Whats draining your job search battery?1. Focusing on your search too muchApplying for job after for job can be taxing, and it can take the passion out of your career. As you continue to apply for jobs, make time for things you enjoy doing. Try to find ways to become more energized and encouraged to accomplish your goals by engaging in other activities.Every day, take time to break away from your job search to work on something you enjoy, even if it doesnt apply directly to your career. This could be anything from taking a break for exercise to working on a hobby. It will help you recharge and come back to your search feeling energized and inspired.2. P ressure from friends and family to get a jobYour family and friends care about you, and they want to see you land a job and get your career started (or moving, if youve already been working). However, they can negatively affect your job search by putting unnecessary pressure on you to get a job. It can cause you to feel stressed and panicked. You cant stop your friends and family from asking how your job search is going, but you can turn their questions into constructive help. Let them know what kind of job youre looking for and see if they know of any openings. Maybe they know a professional in the field whom you could shadow. They may be able to look at your resume and give you feedback. Instead of feeling pressure from them, allow them to help you in your search.3. Internal pressureTheres no doubt every job seeker wants to land a job. However, dont become so focused on getting a job that you burn yourself out. Internal pressure can drain your battery and cause you to get burned ou t quickly, especially if you feel the need to get a job as soon as possible. Its easy to feel overwhelmed by the vast number of websites and job boards. Try not to focus on the pressure you may feel. Instead, make a plan and use strategies. Find a few key sites for job postings and use them consistently. Manage your applications and try to do a few per day. Stay organized by keeping track of where you apply and when. If you start feeling too much pressure, take a break to focus on something else.4. Applying to the wrong jobsIdentify your needs. Whats your dream job? Where do you want your career to be in five years? Once you determine exactly what you want from your job, youll create a better plan for applying for jobs and networking with employers. If there is a particular niche you want to work in, focus on finding jobs in that area. Study says socioeconomic status impacts success over test scores
Study says socioeconomic status impacts success over test scores Study says socioeconomic status impacts success over test scores When you have a talented student from a socially disadvantaged background and a less-talented student from a privileged background, often itâs the more privileged student who makes it.How socioeconomic status is tied to succeeding in school and beyond is among the findings of a new report from researchers at Georgetown University. The report analyzed data from the National Center for Education Statistics to attribute for the academic results of students from kindergarten through college.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The gap starts at the beginningThe gap starts at kindergarten. Among economically disadvantaged kids, black students have it especially hard.Six in 10 black students who had above-median test scores as kindergartners have been left behind by eighth grade, compared to fewer than four in 10 white and Latino students and two in 10 Asian students. And for those w ho donât start out with great test scores, their chances of improvement depend on class: a child from an âaffluentâ family with who scores low in kindergarten is more than twice as likely to recover and have high test scores in eighth grade as a low-scoring kindergartener from a poor family. To break it down, a kindergartner from an affluent background with test scores in the bottom half still has a 7 in 10 chance of reaching a high socioeconomic status by the time theyâre a young adult. And a disadvantaged kindergartner with test scores in the top half has approximately a 3 in 10 chance of attaining high socioeconomic status by the age of 25.By high school, itâs often too late, and the talent has been lost: 49% of economically disadvantaged students who had above-median math scores in kindergarten have below-median scores in eighth grade.Itâs not just how rich or poor a childâs family background is, either, but also how âprotective and enrichedâ their home envir onments are.As of 2016, families in the highest income quintile spent around $8,600 per year on âenrichment activities,â whereas families in the lowest quintile spent around $1,700 per year. This includes things from books, school supplies, and computers to summer camps, music lessons, private tutors, and extracurricular classes.Higher socioeconomic status parents also spend more time reading to their children â" and it could be extrapolated that perhaps they have more time to do so, assuming that in a disadvantaged family, more children are being raised by a working single mother.By 10th grade, it was found, achievement patterns for both the privileged and the underprivileged were pretty much set. High test-scorers didnât tend to see their scores fall, and low test-scorers didnât tend to see their scores go up.No matter where they fall academically, poor tenth-graders are less likely than affluent students to enroll in college or to complete college if they do go.Still, th ereâs one skill that particularly helps a student from a poor background: good math skills. High math scores in high school increase the changes that a student from a poor background will eventually get a good entry-level job as an adult. You might also enjoy⦠New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklinâs daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Oil and Water Dont Mix Thanks to Ultraviolet Light
Oil and Water Donât Mix Thanks to Ultraviolet Light Oil and Water Donât Mix Thanks to Ultraviolet Light Oil and Water Donât Mix Thanks to UV Light Gareth McKinley, school of engineering professor of teaching innovation at MIT, was part of a team fascinated with trying to come up with superior ways to separate oil from water, a function that is critical in the oil and petroleum industry. Now he believes theyve found a method that just might be a game-changer for oil rigs and beyond, with light ultraviolet to be specific paving the way. Keep Them Separated When you produce oil from reservoirs that are not brand new you typically have to do enhanced oil recovery, McKinley explains, describing the ways companies extract as much of the oil from a field as possible. One of the ways is pushing vast amounts of water underground. A mature reservoir might produce five to seven gallons of water for every gallon of oil youd produce. It doesnt come out nicely but as emulsifier mixture, like taking vinaigrette and shaking it upthen gravity comes in and oil rises and water sinks. McKinleys team wanted increased control of wettability surfaces. We used fine mesh for one phase where you go through and another phase where its repelled. You can either let water through and repel oil or vice versa. You lock holes in mesh over time and end up eventually with clogging. Our paper thinks about trying to make surfaces that not only let one phase through and prevent another phase, but if they get an impurity or clogging can you use radiating light to clean it or get rid of the impurity? A new system developed by MIT engineers could make it possible to control the way water moves over a surface, using only light. Image: Jose-Luis Olivares/MIT The UV Effect Ultraviolet light is the highest radiation energy you can think of that is easy to access, McKinley says. So if you put UV on something in sterilized water it can be used to clean surfaces, he says. The novel thing we did is to use photocatalysisthe photocatalytic effect. To make it more efficient, we used nanoparticles of titania. What we were using was TiO2 to interact with UV light and produce free radicals which would degrade the oil on the surface. Now we would call this multifunctional membraneyou separate oil and water but also, if you shine light on it, then it would degrade oil and clean itself. The problem with titania is that it only works well with the very highest energy part of the sun spectrum and only four percent of sunlight is there, according to McKinley. What we set out to do is figure out the way to harness the rest of the solar spectrum, he says. The way we did this was by using dye to absorb blue light or the higher energy part of spectrum and emit it as a lower part of the spectrum. So if we see red dye its because it is absorbing all of the blue light and emitting in the red part of spectrum. Separate oil and water and oil can be used eventually in a refinery and water can be reused to get more oil out of the ground, he offers. Thats a big application here but a side part of it because now you have a surface that responds to light, he says. Also, if they shine light on one side of the drop and not on the other side, it changes the property of the drop. If we change that, we show on the side with the lower contact angle that there is a pulling force that pulls force in that direction, he says.By doing this, we can shine light on that surface and the drop will move in that direction now. That means we have a way to do this without even touching a surface, so, on a fundamental science level, we can put a light on the surface and move droplets around. The possibilities from it are if you have a chemical reaction then you can use each droplet as a chemical reactor but we were interested because we want to coalesce dropswe want them to merge together. Finally, McKinley says it also allows for another kind of water to be in the fold. When youre talking about being in sea water, its a real challenge to find a system that worked with it, he says. It was a great moment to figure out the right dye to use to make it work when one phase is seawater and another phase is oil. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Now we would call this multifunctional membraneyou separate oil and water but also, if you shine light on it, then it would degrade oil and clean itself.Prof. Gareth McKinley, MIT

The Future of Design
The Future of Design The Future of Design The Future of Design There are elements of engineering design that are cruder than they might first seem. The way designers input data into CAD is based largely on how programmers input their code, not what might be most natural. And the place where designers workthe officemay soon be outmoded. Levent Burak Kara, assistant mechanical engineering professor at Carnegie Mellon, has been developing a pen-like device that he hopes will some day soon take the place of the computer mouse. The idea is to replace the traditional mouse and keyboard with more natural, human-centric tools, Kara said. His pen would let engineers use the computer screen like a piece of paper, but with more depth. The difference between Karas pen and the pen and tablet long available to graphic designers is the ability to sketch in three dimensions. The device would have applications beyond engineering. A surgeon, for instance, might perform virtual surgery using the pen in place of a scalpel. Early computer users, circa 1960, interacted with their computers by sweeping a light pen across an x-y plotter. The pen fell out of favor, but may be poised for a resurgence, when it comes to CAD.Karas idea harks back to the early days of CAD. In 1963, Ivan Sutherland, a student at MIT, created his Sketchpad system. The program used a light pen as an input device. Sutherland believed that for describing the shape of a mechanical part or the connections of an electrical circuit, typed statements can prove cumbersome. So where, then is our Sutherland pen? Nongraphical people took hold of computer development and took it beyond graphics and CAD programs, Kara said. Unix was textual based, so the computer evolved around the keyboard. They needed more pointing and clicking than drawing, and the mouse was good for pointing and clicking. Now were trying to get back to more natural tools. Jon Hirschtick, founder of SolidWorks, hopes to add touch-screens, such as those found on iPads and ATM machines, as an interface for CAD. Engineers might draw on the screen with a pen-based input or might use a haptic device to feel as though theyre grabbing a model to manipulate it. The most frequently used commands in the CAD program are moving models around, Hirschtick said. So the idea of interacting with the model by grabbing it with your hand is powerful. Hirschtick also sees engineers routinely printing in 3-D to study designs, just as publishers today print manuscripts to proof them on paper rather than on the screen. Though the technology has been around for some time, it is becoming more affordable and now has a place in small businesses. The cost of the equipment, the fidelity of the modelits color and accuracyall that is changing faster than anything else I know of in the CAD and computer landscape, Hirschtick said. Perhaps a greater 3-D change is coming to the way engineers do business. Mark Jakiela, a professor of mechanical design at Washington University, is developing methods that will make it possible for mechanical engineers to work independently, as freelance talent, unchained to a single locale. Freelancers could have more and varied opportunities for employment, said Jakiela, and the companies they work for would have fewer costs in terms of long-term benefits and office space. Under the model envisioned by Jakiela, independent mechanical engineers would band together to work on a project through an Internet site. Jakiela studied how engineers at large equipment manufacturers work together on product development. To translate that method to the Internet, Jakiela developed a forum type software (commonly found on the Webin which a poster begins a threaded conversation to which other posters respond) for engineers. The real value is in the process, Jakiela said. The software itself is not radically new. [Adapted from Design Futures, by Jean Thilmany, Associate Editor, Mechanical Engineering, September 2008.] The idea is to replace the traditional mouse and keyboard with more natural, human-centric toolsLevent Burak Kara, Assistant Mechanical Engineering Professor at Carnegie Mellon

Profile of the American Criminal Justice Branches
Profile of the American Criminal Justice Branches Profile of the American Criminal Justice Branches If youre considering any sort of job in one of the many criminal justice careers, chances are you have a lot of questions about what sort of careers may be available to you. One of the best ways to help decide what may be the best career path for you is to first gain a basic understanding of the American criminal justice system itself. By familiarizing yourself with the process by which crimes are investigated, and people are brought to justice, you can make a better choice about where you think you might fit. Its always a good idea to learn where your interests and talents may be of the most benefit, both to yourself and to the system. Criminal Justice System Components On its most basic level, there are essentially three branches of the criminal justice system. They are: Law enforcementThe court systemCorrections These three basic components make up the steps through which a person is arrested, tried and subsequently punished. Law Enforcement Law enforcement involves the detection and investigation of crimes. Careers available within the law enforcement branch of the criminal justice system include: Police officersDetectives and investigatorsDispatchers and duty officersForensic science technicians Law enforcement may also include criminal profilers, special agents and civilian regulatory or investigative personnel. Once a crime has been detected, law enforcement officers write reports and collect evidence, and develop probable cause. Once sufficient evidence exists to show a person has committed a crime, he is arrested and brought to the court system for trial and adjudication or judgment. Court System The court system is where an arrested person can stand trial, view the evidence against him and confront his accusers. During the court phase of a criminal case, the person who was arrested becomes a defendant. The court process is often a long one, and people may sometimes wait a year or longer before they are brought to trial. In most cases, they can go about their business freely, with some conditions, while they await trial. In extraordinary circumstances, though, defendants are held in jail until their trial. It typically occurs if they are considered to be flight risks or a danger to the public. Careers available within the court system are: Prosecutors/State or District AttorneysParalegalsForensic psychologistsBailiffsLegal secretariesJudgesProcess serversJury consultants There are many options available to a defendant once they enter the court system. Very few accused people go to trial. Many plead guilty or nolo contendre (no contest) before they get to trial. In these circumstances, the defendant will come to an agreement with the prosecuting attorney on a more lenient sentence in exchange for waiving their right to trial. After a judgment is rendered, the defendant is turned over to the corrections system for punishment if he is found guilty. Corrections System In the corrections system, a defendant may go to prison or jail depending on the charge. Prison is a state or federal-run facility, whereas jail is controlled by local authorities. Prison is reserved for longer sentences based on more serious crimes. Jail, on the other hand, is designed for shorter sentences and for defendants awaiting trial. Careers available for those interested in corrections include: Corrections officersProbation and community control officersCorrectional treatment specialistsPrison and forensic psychologists In many cases, those who have pleaded or been found guilty of a crime may be sentenced to some form of probation or may be placed on parole after completing their prison sentence. In these instances, they are able to go free but must report to a probation or parole officer while they are under supervised release. 9 of the Biggest Job Interview Mistakes
9 of the Biggest Job Interview Mistakes 9 of the Biggest Job Interview Mistakes 54Getting called to interview with a company that you really want to work for is truly exciting stuff. Youâre bound to be happy- and probably nervous, too. No matter what industry youâre in, though, youâll definitely want to avoid nine of the biggest job interview mistakes out there. Steer clear of these errors, and youâll ace your interview! 1. You forgot the job you applied for. There are many embarrassing things that can happen during an interview, but forgetting the actual job that you applied for ranks pretty high. Although you might have applied to a lot of jobs lately, avoid job interview mistakes like this by brushing up on the specific job for which youâre interviewing beforehand. Read through the job description again to familiarize yourself with the role and its responsibilities. That way, youâll be prepared to answer specific questions regarding how your experience uniquely qualifies you for the position. 2. You didnât research the company ahead of time. In order to avoid overthinking how youâre going to answer the questions during your job interview, you decide that youâre just going to wing it. But going into an interview blind is never advisable. If you donât know what the organization stands for, its company culture, and what its operations are about, you wonât be able to answer questions relating to those topics during the interview. Research every company before you go in for the interview. This can help get you through to the next round of interviews. 3. You were dressed inappropriately. Professional attire for the interview that matches the atmosphere, as well as the climate, is important. If the company adheres to a strict business dress code, showing up in your business casual attire will not look good. To get a sense of what the companyâs vibe is like, visit its social media channels. Are the company photos full of employees dressed in button-down suits, or are they dressed in jeans and tees? Before you decide to dress down for your interview, keep in mind that no matter how lax the companyâs dress code is, you should still wear some version of business casual clothing for your interview. 4. You got caught lying. In an effort to position yourself as the candidate to hire, you told a slightly exaggerated version of the truth during your job interview. (Okay, you lied.) While itâs understandable to want to fudge an answer in an effort to impress the hiring manager, lying can do serious damage to not only your chances of getting this job, but your professional reputation as a whole. Word can spread throughout your industry that you lied during an interview, and can impede your chances of getting hired in the future. So stick to telling the truth during your interview- youâll be better off in the long run for it. 5. You arrived too late- or too early. Itâs no secret that being late to an interview can ruin it. The same goes for being too early. If you arrive a half hour early to an interview, great, but donât check in or announce your presence until about 15 minutes prior to your scheduled time (unless the employer asked you otherwise). Doing so might make you appear pushy and may cause the hiring manager to feel rushed to start your interview. 6. You werenât genuine. When employers are conducting interviews, theyâre looking to not just find out if you can do the job, but theyâre also trying to discover who you are as a person, too. Thatâs why itâs important to be as genuine as possible during your interview. Faking everything about who you are is a good way to not make it further in the interview process. Keep in mind that employers have likely researched you online, and if you act completely different in person than you seem online, itâll raise a red flag. 7. You left your cell phone on. During a job interview, you want your interviewer to feel like all of your attention is solely focused on them. Thing is, you canât do that if your cell is buzzing away, or worse, ringing/dinging/whistling at you. Once youâre called into your interview, make sure to shut your phone off. Even having a phone on vibrate can be disturbing (and embarrassing) if the room is quiet enough. It can be distracting to both you and your potential employer, and is a big job interview no-no. 8. You badmouthed your current or past employer. Sure, your previous employer might have made your workdays a misery. But badmouthing prior employers (even if youâre right) is a very wrong thing to do. It often has the opposite effect intended- making you look worse than your employer. And keep in mind that if youâre job searching in the same field, there is a chance that your prospective employer and former one might know each other. So if youâre asked why you left your last job, cite other excuses (such as the lack of growth in your job, or your desire to work for this particular company), and skip the badmouthing altogether. 9. You didnât sell yourself. While no one likes a braggart, there is something to be said for being able to sell yourself during a job interview. This means knowing what your strengths are and how they can tie into the requirements of the role. Essentially, you want to make the case for why youâre the best person for the job to a potential employer, so be honest about your accomplishments by backing them up with facts and figures to support your claims.
